I felt it — maybe these small, silent moments and details are life itself...
July 28, 2019
I want to tell you another story — one from my stories of silence.
I think I should start a little series called “The Silence Chronicles,” because I have so many to share...
This story still lingers in my mind to this day...
It also happened in one of the cities, in one of the countries — I can’t share where exactly or during which training, due to the training format and confidentiality.
We were sent out to do an exercise where we had to approach people and say just a few words:
“May I join you?”
No passport. No money. No phone.
No identity — Who am I?
Only these two words: “May I join you?”
And silence.
If someone asked a question, we were to remain silent — simply observing what arose within us when we didn’t respond, when we stayed quiet and simply allowed ourselves to be, without needing to explain why.
As I was walking through the city, I noticed a woman — probably homeless — sitting by a shop, asking for help.
I approached her and asked,
“May I join you?”
She smiled and replied in another language, apparently not understanding what I said.
I smiled back and sat down beside her.
She looked at me — with such warm and kind eyes —
“My name is...” (unfortunately, I can’t remember her name anymore).
“What’s your name?”
Then she gently placed her hand on my shoulder and patted me with tenderness.
Her warmth took me by surprise.
It touched me deeply... my heart softened...
But I wasn’t allowed to speak.
So I just smiled softly, and looked into her eyes with gratitude.
She repeated again,
“This is my name... and you?”
Still, her look was warm and friendly.
No words.
Just silence.
Eye contact.
And an unbelievably deep spiritual connection...
After a while, I stood up, looked at her again, and said goodbye — with my eyes.
Then, gently, I touched her shoulder too —
as a sign of my gratitude.
She took my hand in hers,
and with eyes full of gratitude, she also said goodbye — without words.
I don’t know what exactly happened,
but something shifted inside me...
I can’t name it —
but something about it touches my heart so deeply...
In that moment, I realized how much I miss in life —
perhaps even life itself —
when I live caught up in routine, in the everyday...
I felt it — maybe these small, silent moments and details are life itself...
